The study lasted eight weeks, and participants completed the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression at the beginning and end of the study.

Both groups experienced a decrease in depression by the end of the study, but the effect was greater for those practicing yoga.

Those in the yoga group were also more likely to be exempted than those who received medication alone.

After 14 of 16 classes, participants experienced an increase in positive emotions, and negative emotions subsided after 15 out of 16 classes.

In a study of university staff, published in the 2011 edition of The Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health researchers analyzed the impact of yoga on mood and behavioral conditions.

For six weeks, one group of participants attended a one-hour yoga class per week, and the other group worked as a controller.

Moods and attitudes were measured at the beginning and end of the study.

The results showed that those in the yoga group found a purpose for increased health and satisfaction, as well as improved self-esteem.

They also report increased feelings;

After 12 weeks, those who practice yoga reduce anxiety significantly more than those in the walking group.

Further research has shown that yoga can reduce anxiety.

In 2009, researchers from The journal Perceptual and Motor Skills found that those who practiced yoga for two hours experienced a 14.7 percent decrease in anxiety levels.

In a study of depressed women, researchers in a 2005 edition of The American Journal of Case Reports found that two yoga classes per week significantly reduced anxiety levels after three months.

Yoga may also serve as an intervention for those who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. 

Researchers in 2013, The Publication of Military Medicine analyzed the effects of a six week yoga intervention on a group of veterans.

Veterans who are dedicated to yoga twice a week, and they experienced an improvement in sleep quality, and hyperarousal symptoms. 

Further research has indicated that yoga can help people cope with the stress of a traumatic event. 

In a recent study, in the 2007 edition of The evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, in the tsunami survivors completed a one-week yoga program, and experienced a significant reduction in fear, anxiety, depression, irritability, and disturbed sleep.


Yoga can be used as a tool for the treatment of the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and research also suggests that it may be of some help to those who are suffering from anxiety, depression and stress. 

In addition, those who practice yoga tend to enjoy an improvement in mood.
